14.09.202604:41:25UTC+00Japan Industrial Output Drops for First Time in 4 Months

Japan’s industrial production declined by 0.2% month-on-month in July 2026, contradicting preliminary estimates that had pointed to a 0.1% increase and reversing the 1.9% gain recorded in June. This marked the first contraction since March, reflecting ongoing external uncertainties and uneven global demand. Output weakened in transport equipment excluding motor vehicles (-4.0% vs +2.0% in June), fabricated metals (-3.2% vs +2.2%), and plastic products (-0.9% vs +4.5%). By contrast, production increased in production machinery (+5.1% vs +7.7%), inorganic and organic chemicals (+6.0% vs +2.6%), and electronic parts and devices (+2.6% vs -6.1%). On a year-on-year basis, industrial output rose 3.9%, down from 4.9% in June but still posting a second consecutive month of expansion.
